Residents attend cancer awareness campaign

Under the theme ‘Your health is your responsibility’, members of the community, who attended in large numbers, were screened for different types of cancer, including breast, cervical and prostate cancer.

Greater Germiston Women Empowerment Consortium (GCWEC), a non-profit organisation based in Katlehong, held a cancer awareness campaign in Sphamandla Section, Katlehong, on October 25.

Under the theme ‘Your health is your responsibility’, members of the community, who attended in large numbers, were screened for different types of cancer, including breast, cervical and prostate cancer.

People were also tested for HIV and Aids and offered counselling.

According to Zuko Mgobhoza, social auxiliary worker, the purpose of the event was to educate people about cancer and encourage them to stand up for their health.

“We are here today to encourage people to look after their own health. Women who are sexually active are at risk of being diagnosed with cervical cancer. Men also have a higher risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer,” said Mgobhoza, adding that they wanted to minimise deaths caused by a lack of knowledge.

Sbongile Khumalo, one of the community members who attended the event, said there are many things that she learned on the day.

Getting ready to be screened for cervical cancer is Mathapelo Tsotetsi. She was screened by sister Monca Diphoko, from Eluthandweni Maternity Clinic.

“Those who made presentations on the day were spot on. They gave relevant information. Everything that we wanted to hear, we heard today. There is one speaker who told us how important our lives are, not only to us, but also to our children as well. He told us how important it was to be tested for cancer before it was too late,” said Khumalo.

Nurses from Ramokonopi Clinic were present to offer cancer screening, while Eluthandweni Maternity Clinic did Pap smears.

Aurum Institute did HIV testing and counselling.

Godfrey Mthethwa, from Man of Purpose, gave a motivational speech, while breast cancer survivor Jemina Mdiba shared her experience of living with the disease.
