City’s matrics celebrate

Germiston’s schools abuzz as the class of 2019 collect their results.

Finally the long wait for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results came to an end, on Wednesday.

Learners from across the city flocked to their respective high schools to collect their certificates, and for the most part Germiston was full of smiles, as the youngsters compared results, chatted with teachers and shared their plans for the future.

The top performing school in the city was Hoërskool Goudrif, which celebrated a 96.77 per cent pass rate.

“I am happy with the results,” said Johan Greyling, the principal of Hoërskool Goudrif.

“They are much better than the year before last and it’s taken hard work and persistence.

“Children must also realise that they have a role to play and they need to put in the work.”

From the 93 matric learners, 58 (62.4 per cent) attained bachelor’s passes, 29 (31.2 per cent) attained diploma passes and three (3.2 per cent) higher certificate passes.

The school achieved 20 distinctions overall.

The top three learners from the school were AJ van Zyl with five distinctions in English, mathematics, engineering graphics and design, physical sciences and life orientation. Rochelle Botha with four distinctions in Afrikaans, English, life orientation and geography and Alexzander Knodel with three distinctions in life orientation, geography and life sciences.

The school is looking forward to the new academic year and have 200 Grade Eights expected to start.

Germiston High School celebrated a pass rate of 95.45 per cent, the second highest in the city.

“We are very satisfied with our results,” said principal Renée Goosen.

“We worked hard with these matrics, and they were not a particularly strong academic group, however, they were given support and assisted wherever possible through numerous intervention strategies.”

Two-hundred-and-one learners wrote matric, with 81 learners receiving their bachelor’s passes and 86 learners receiving diploma passes.

Top achiever and representative council of learners (RCL) president for 2019, Ntuthuko Hlatshwayo, achieved seven distinctions in English, Afrikaans, life orientation, mathematics, economics, life sciences and physical science.

“I was surprised with my results,” said Hlatshwayo.

“I am very proud of the outcome, even though I know I can do better, I am very happy with my results.”

Hlatshwayo is planning on studying medicine and has her heart set on specialising in neurology.

Other top achievers at Germiston High School were Nuha Alli and Lesedi Mashego, who attained five distinctions each, and Atlegang Maubane and Nozipho Ntonibela with four distinctions each.

“Our matrics and our staff members are congratulated and thanked for the excellent work done in 2019, and we look forward to even better results in 2020,” said Goosen.

They were closely followed by Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston who celebrated a 95 per cent pass rate.

“We are very happy and satisfied with our learners,” said Retha du Toit, principal of Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston.

“It is due to the dedication and hard work of the learners and the educators, as well as the support of the parents.”

Among the 104 learners who wrote the exams, 65 learners received their bachelor’s passes and 27 learners received diploma passes.

The school also received 56 distinctions.

“I am very proud of my results,” said de Jager.

“I was unsure when I wrote one of my exams, but I felt very confident about the rest, and when I was done I realised the stress was unnecessary.”

Although some learners did not make it, there is still an opportunity in June for them to write supplementary examinations.

“It is not the end of the road, and there is still a bright future out there for everybody who is willing to work hard and persevere,” said du Toit.

“We congratulate all the learners and wish them all the best for the future.”

Hoërskool Primrose High School achieved a 90 per cent pass rate, a 3.1 per cent drop from the 2018 results, but despite this principal André Grobler is pleased with the results.

“We had 55 bachelor’s passes, 57 diploma passes and 21 higher certificate passes,” Grobler explained.

“Our learners also earned 24 distinctions between them, five of which came from Matsidiso Hlongwane.”

The school’s other top achievers were Asanda Dahile with three distinctions and Itumeleng Molele and Lucia Langa both with two distinctions.

The GCN spoke to Hlongwane, who achieved distinctions in mathematics, life orientation, computer application technology, life sciences and physical sciences, while she collected her certificate from the school.

“I am very proud of myself,” Hlongwane said.

“I didn’t think I would get five distinctions.

“I was only aiming for three, but I am very happy with the five.”

Hlongwane plans to study chemical engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg.

When asked why she would like to pursue this career, Hlongwane explained, “I want to invent things and feel chemical engineering will allow me to do this.”

Grobler complimented the school’s dedicated teachers and credited their hard work for the school’s pass rate.

“I will say it year after year, I don’t think enough credit is given to the teachers, not just at our school but everywhere, and I thank our wonderful educators for all their hard work,” Grobler said.

Grobler, who looks forward to the new year at the school, wished the class of 2019 all the best as they head out into the world.

Dawnview High School staff and learners celebrated the school’s 89 per cent pass rate.

The results were the cause of much delight for a number of the school’s learners as they were pleased they had passed the year and were looking forward to the future.

Principal of the school Moeketsie Kolokoto said, “I am happy about the quality of the results.

“We had a tough group but we managed to produce results and we hope to improve in 2020.”

From the 103 matric leaners who sat for the NSC examinations 44 achieved bachelor’s passes and 44 learners achieved diploma passes.

The school was thrilled to achieve a 100 per cent pass rate in several subjects, including consumer studies, computer application technology, life orientation and accounting.

Thulani Mathebula, Gabriella Lundie and Tswanelo Ndlela were the school’s top achievers.

With the positive results Olivier and his staff now look to the future.

“I am very optimistic about the year ahead,” he said.

“I am sure, despite having a very large 2020 matric group, we will be able to make the 90 per cent pass rate mark.”
