Police crack down on the illegal sale of alcohol in Primrose’s informal settlements

Five suspects arrested, five illegal taverns closed and litres of alcohol confiscated in recent police operation.

Officers from the Primrose Police Station recently visited the Makause and Marathon informal settlements in an effort to crack down on a number of crimes they believe are related to the illegal sale of alcohol.

These crimes include assault, domestic violence, rape and loud music (disturbing the peace).

During the visit officers visited several taverns and asked the owners of each establishment for their liquor licence.

If an owner was unable to provide one the tavern was closed down, the liquor confiscated and the owner arrested on a charge of dealing in liquor without a licence.

Five suspects, between the ages of 32 and 45 years old, were arrested during the operation and their taverns closed.

All of the suspects were taken to the Primrose Police Station, and two were released after each paying admission of guilt fines.

The remaining three suspects appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court where their cases were postponed to a later date.

Police plan to hold similar operations in the future.
