Cashbuild rewards school at Art-at-Heart ceremony

The Art-at-Heart competition is a southern African Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the region’s most needy schools.

Eight primary schools in Katlehong were the lucky winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition.

Kwanele, Thembalethu, Matshediso, Mutingati, Umzamo, Lungisani, Chivirikani, and Nqubela primary schools became this year’s recipients of the prestigious prize.

The schools each received a Cashbuild building material voucher to the value of R15 000, which means the schools will be able to improve and repair their premises.

The vouchers were handed out to all the schools at the Art-at-Heart ceremony at the new Cashbuild store at Sam Ntuli Mall on February 6.

Thembalethu Primary School and Matshediso Primary School were just two of the eight schools that each received a Cashbuild building material voucher.

Sibongile Monaheng, the principal of Thembalethu Primary, said they are grateful to Cashbuild for this voucher.

“We have a big project to retile all the classrooms and repair some of the ceilings, so with this voucher, I am glad we will be able to start this process. We will now be able to purchase the tiles and any other materials we will require,” said Monaheng.

Matsediso Primary’s principal, Abel Masha, said: “With this voucher, we will be building a well-equipped play area for our 57 pre-school learners. At the moment, the play area is sandy, has run-down play equipment and is on the other side of the school grounds. Now we are able to fence off the area and add some new items which will help the learners with their outdoor learning experiences.”

At the Art-at-Heart ceremony, the children entertained everyone with singing, cultural dancing, and theatrical performances.

The competition entails learners from each school to submit their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is then displayed at the ceremony and remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next six years.

The artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third places respectively. The Manager’s Choice was awarded to a learner from Kwanele Primary School, who was the overall winner of the competition. This award was announced on the day and the winning learner received a stationery pack and a trophy. The winner was also given the honour of officially opening the new store.

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched 19 years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than 3 500 schools in Southern Africa with over R44-million worth of building materials.

Cashbuild is BEE compliant and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools but also creates jobs for community members.
