Don’t fall victims of cell phone scams and fake pastors
Vosloorus SAPS communications official Capt Piet Rossouw have issued a warning to local residents and those of greater Ekurhuleni area to be wary of fake cell phone operation prevalent in the region.
He warned community members to be vigilant, and not to trust strangers who misrepresent themselves as companies’ mobile phone representatives.
“We at SAPS are lately experiencing frequent fraud and theft cases being opened.
“There are instances of strangers who pose as representatives of cell phone companies, promising victims to provide them with better cell phone contract deals, and also demanding that victims do a sim swap, and requiring the victims’ PIN code.
“Later on, the victim will discover that their banking details have been harvested, and their funds transferred to unknown accounts,” said Rossouw.
Rossouw warned the residents to be also aware of a fake pastor who scams unsuspecting victims, using deceptive methods to rob them of their household items.

“He uses different modus operandi. He will enter the victim’s home, preach and also ask to pray for them. He will send them to go and buy something to drink, and on their return, he will have helped himself to their household valuables, and disappeared. On other occasions, the so-called pastor will provide his victims with a spiked drink which will make them feel dizzy and sleepy. When they wake up, their belonging will have disappeared,” Rossouw said.
He has asked the residents to help the police to apprehend white collar criminals.
