HSFC to celebrate 81 years of existence

Home Sweepers Football Club (HSFC), one of the oldest clubs in the township of Vosloorus, will be celebrating 81 years of existence this year.

Meshack Mabaso, one of the three club directors, told Kathorus MAIL that the football club was established in 1938 in Stirtonville, Boksburg, more than 80 years ago.

He said for the club to have such a rich history and still going strong today is a miracle considering the fact that it is an amateur club running five divisions u-11, u-13, u-15, u-17 and super league, without any sponsorship or any financial backing.

“Our priority project for this year is to commemorate the club’s 81st anniversary and is the only club in Vosloorus that has been in existence for this long.

“This club has its roots in Stirtonville, now known as Reiger Park before the black residents were forcefully removed by the apartheid government in 1963 to the new township, Vosloorus. HSFC was 25 years old when we left Stirtonville,” recalls Mabaso.

Sipho Zikalala, another club director, added that should they be successful in hosting, commemorating and celebrating their 81-year anniversary, they will honour the dead, old and present officials and founding member.

“Eighty-one years is no child’s playing, citing the current economic situation. Currently, the club is affiliated to SAFA Ekurhuleni under Vosloorus Local Football Association with all the five divisions partaking in the association,” Zikalala explains.

Joseph Ndala, the third director, said the team’s trophy cabinet is full of trophies since it was established.

“There are so many trophies, I can’t even remember the number of trophies we have won since the day the team was established. Among other trophies are VLFA Supper Cup, where we won 3-1 against Refinery All-Stars in 1975. Sports Festival Soccer Tournament in 1984, Night Soccer Tournament in 1996 with the u-19 team, Super League in 2005 as well as Hollywood Bets Football Tournament with u-15 in 2017,” said Ndala.

“They win the league almost every year.”

The team has produced a couple of players who have played their trade in the Absa premiership. These players include Fortune Makaringe who plays for Orlando Pirates’ senior team after leaving Maritzburg United this season and Nenry Mhlongo, who played for Witbank Aces between 1981 and 1986.

There are several good players who are the products of HSFC who play their trade in the Vodacom League, as well as the ABC Motsepe League.

“All these players are top quality league players. They can play for any of the Absa Premiership teams,” said Mabaso.
