Man dies in R21 collision

Maloka also said a third truck hit the side barrier on the road as the driver tried to avoid the crash.

A man was killed in a crash involving three trucks and a motor vehicle on the R21 on July 13.

The man is believed to have been the driver of one of the trucks involved in the collision that occurred around 6am in the morning.

According to Eric Maloka, the spokesperson for DEMS, the man’s body was stuck under one of the trucks for nearly four hours.

He said it was believed that the driver of one of the trucks transporting two tankers swerved to avoid another vehicle.

“As he swerved, the truck became unstable.

“One of the tankers unhinged from the first one.

“Other motorists and another truck, that was allegedly driven by the deceased, swerved to avoid the lose tanker,” Maloka said.

“While trying to swerve away from the tanker the truck rolled over and landed on its side.”

Maloka also said a third truck hit the side barrier on the road as the driver tried to avoid the crash.

The deceased driver of the truck is believed to have been ejected from his vehicle.

The light motor vehicle at the scene rolled several times and came to a standstill next to the road barriers.

Maloka said the deceased was travelling with an assistance driver who was transported to Arwyp Hospital by private ambulance service.

“The driver of the vehicle said he was fine and that he would seek medical treatment later that day,” added Maloka.

“The tanker contained styrene which is a dangerous and highly flammable chemical. The Spill Tech Emergency Response team was called in to assist,” said Maloka.

“Teams checked for possible spillage at the scene. Contact with the product could cause severe burns to skin and eyes, it is also highly flammable.”
