Const Phooko, a woman serving with pride
"If you are passionate about your work you will grab every opportunity that comes your way to improve your skills."
As we celebrate Women’s Month, we take a look at women from all walks of life and celebrate them for the work they do.
Const Daphney Phooko is a communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.
Daphney has been in the South African Police Service for 13 years and said it has been an amazing journey for her.
She was inspired by another woman in blue – her aunt who was also in the profession.
“She made me fall in love with policing. She was very disciplined and she motivated me to never stop studying.
“If you are passionate about your work you will grab every opportunity that comes your way to improve your skills,” said Daphney.

She said her aunt’s hard work and advice brought positive impact into her life.
“As women, we sometimes experience situations where you have to deal with male suspects who refuse to listen to you because you are a woman.
“They will say they don’t want to listen to a woman or be advised by a woman. Others would even say they don’t want to be arrested by a woman but through the training we get we are able to overcome all those challenges,” said Daphney.
She said the SAPS has afforded equal opportunities for both men and women.
“Whether you’re a man or woman, we are treated the same. The only time we do things differently is when we search the suspects. Females are searched by female officers. Other than that, we are doing the same duties,” said Daphney.
She said as a woman she is grateful for the opportunities the SAPS has offered her and encourages other women in any profession to dedicate themselves to their work.
