Khethiwe offers comfort and support to victims through care packages

As we celebrate Women's Month, we talk to different women about the work they do in their communities and profession.

Women continue to impact society even today, just like they did when they marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on August 9, 1956.

The 20-year-old the University of the Witwatersrand student said her initiative was a response to a statement made by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the lockdown about the rising numbers of gender-base violence (GBV) cases.

“I listened to the president’s address and decided to let my words match my actions,” said Khethiwe.

She started an initiative in April called #HelpingGBVSurvivors.

“The initiative is all about showing support, care and empathy to victims. It involved care packages that contain 20 items for personal hygiene and a diary for survivors to pen their emotions.

“Through these care packages we are showing that we care. GBV is a social ill that we’ve ignored for far too long. Covid-19 restrictions cannot restrict me from providing comfort from a distance.

“When these survivors receive the care packages it’s a reminder that their pain also impacts them psychologically.”

She reminds women who have suffered because of GBV they are survivors.

Her project aims to acknowledge and celebrate these women.

#HelpingGBVSurvivors since it started in April has raised R50 000.

“People have been supportive. I have been receiving donations for the care packages. We donated care packages to women on Mandela Day, which I am I’m thankful for,” said Khethiwe.

She hopes to inspire other women to also take a stance and say enough is enough.
