Street lamp post falls on pensioner’s home
Neighbours said the old lady is still deeply shocked and traumatised by the incident.
A 61-year-old pensioner, Anna Magongwana, still can’t believe she survived a near-death experience when a 30-metre street lamp post fell on her house in Kunene Street in EmaZulwini, Vosloorus, while she was inside.
Neighbours said the old lady is still deeply shocked and traumatised by the incident.
Residents who live close to high-mast street lamps say they live in fear of losing their lives if nothing is done to stop local nyaope addicts from vandalising infrastructure.
Communities are blaming drug addicts for stripping the nuts that hold the lamp posts on the concrete platform and sell them at scrapyards to feed their addiction. Residents say once the screws are removed, the lamp post becomes loose and topples over.
“We are living in fear as these lamps are quite heavy and could even lead to people losing their lives should the lamp post fall on top of a house.
This also poses a serious danger to people walking or driving in the street,” said Michele Mthombeni who witnessed a similar incident in Extension 13 in Vosoloorus.
