The ANC Caucus in the City of Ekurhuleni will launch a City-wide food security programme, namely, the Home-Based Food Gardening Programme will start on Friday, 20, November in Katlehong.
The event will be hosted at the Apostolic Church Southern Africa in Kwanele section, Ward 103, the event is set to kickstart at 10 AM.
According to Thabang Mashiyane the spokesperson from the office of the Chief Whip, the intention of this programme is to encourage households and other stakeholders to start their own food gardens to reduce food insecurity and promote healthy living.
“The programme aims to provide the identified households and churches with resources to enable them to produce enough food to meet their basic food security needs throughout the year and also generate an income from the selling of surplus produce,” said Mashiyane.
With the high rate of unemployment and poverty and the severe impact of Covid-19, the Office of the Chief Whip in Ekurhuleni saw it befitting to embark on the establishment of this programme to assist communities in improving food security and alleviating poverty.
“We invite Ward Councillors and members of the community as there will be a demonstration of how to plant by the Experts. This will assist the community to understand the importance of having a food garden,” said Mashiyane.
