Two killed in N3 crash

The cause of the crash will be subject to an investigation by the EMPD.

Two taxi passengers were killed on Monday last week when the vehicle allegedly collided with a metal barrier on the N3 highway.

Fourteen other passengers sustained severe injuries during the crash, which occurred between the Gillooly’s Interchange and the Linksfield off-ramp.

Spokesperson for City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) DEMS William Ntladi said the fire and rescue team from Bedfordview Fire Station received the call at around 5.30am.

“They responded to the scene and found a taxi on its side, with two patients still trapped in the front seat.”

He added that medical officers and rescue crews rendered prehospital medical treatment to the 14 casualties, including the taxi driver, before they were transported to Edenvale hospital for further care.

“Two adults, a male and a female, were declared dead on scene,” Ntladi said.

He said rescue teams used specialised hydraulic rescue tools to recover the trapped bodies from the wreckage.

“Forensic pathologists removed the two bodies to an appropriate facility in Germiston.”

The cause of the crash will be subject to an investigation by the EMPD.
