Sihle, queen of basketball

I dedicated myself and practise to master the game.

Many sporting codes have been on hold during lockdown. Germiston Basketball Club, like many, has been unable to continue with any of their tournaments. The club caters for all basketball lovers, young and old.

Kawa Phiri, the club’s chairperson, said players have been affected by the lockdown but have been finding ways to keep fit.

“It’s almost a year now and our players have not been able to compete. Players miss the courts, training hard, playing together and playing leagues. We are optimistic that the restrictions will be lessened soon and we can get back in the game,” said Phiri.

GCN caught up with Germiston basketball player Sihle Ngwenya. The talented player is a member of Alex Town Queens.

“I started playing basketball in 2014 and I have never looked back. I dedicated myself and practise to master the game,” said Sihle.

She said her journey in basketball has taught her about herself. “It exposed me to different people who have challenged me to do a better player and most important dealing with emotions,” said Sihle.

The young player plans to play professionally. As a basketball player, she would love to see more schools getting into basketball.

“Not every girl wants to play netball, and maybe basketball might be something to consider,” said Sihle.
The pandemic has affected her as a player, but she has been determined to keep fit.

“As a baller, the pandemic really affected us because it meant no game time. We missed all our games and tournaments and we could not practise. It’s not easy for us to just stay home and do nothing,” said the player.
Sihle has been keeping fit by running twice a day and doing some workouts at home.
