Tiaantjie making a name for himself in Esports

Esports is slowly growing in South Africa but does not have as big a following as overseas countries that have a bigger following.
But there are some games that are growing in the South African scene.

Sports has always been associated with the outdoors and requires physical contact and teammates.

The pandemic has to a measure taken away such a privilege of enjoying the outdoors and playing sport.

Esports, however, continues to flourish. While Esports is not as popular in South Africa as overseas, there is a growing interest in the country.

GCN caught up with VS Gaming Championships 2019 winner Tiaan Rheeder from Germiston. His game name is Tiaantjie and he shared more about the world Esport.

This professional gamer started competing officially in 2015 and the 25-year-old always loved playing games. He was eventually introduced to Warcraft.

“I started playing online with friends and that’s when I realised that there was a bigger world connected to it all,” said Tiaantjie.

Esport has a variety of games to choose from and Tiaantjie spends most of his time playing Counter Strike Global Offensive which is a first-person shooter game.

He said it important as a player to find a game to enjoy and to master it. “If you want to play Esport you need to find out what catches your eye. Find the game that you would be passionate about and would want to work towards being a top player.”

Tiaantjie said the biggest challenges for Esports enthusiasts is getting started and finding the right game.

He said the highlight of his career was winning the 2019t VS Gaming Championships.
Tiaantjie is also studying to be a teacher.

The gamer is not only about the online gaming scene, but he also enjoys playing other sports like golf, cricket and squash.

“I would encourage people to try Esport because it offers another level of competing. It’s a good way of seeing a competitive playground from another a view as opposed to a soccer or rugby field. It requires time management,” said Tiaantjie.

Tiaantjie’s top five tips to being a good gamer:

1. Have a passion to become better.
2. Take criticism and learn from your mistakes.
3. Invest time to become the best and know the games well.
4. Keep infirmed about the Meta of the game and be able to adapt to game changes.
5. Be confident when you are playing the game to show you are the best and always back yourself no matter what.
