Consistent and correct use of condoms reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmissions.
In commemoration of National Condom Week (February 14 to 21), Bertha Gxowa Hospital (BGH) Care Centre social workers visited Wannenburg Clinic.
Sr Hazel Moagi, the centre’s operations manager, said their objective was to create awareness about teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and Condom Week to the community of Makause informal settlement and surrounding areas.
The manager and her team of social workers handed out pamphlets and interacted with community members outside and inside the clinic.
“We are here to create awareness about gender-based violence as it is a serious problem in our country. “We want to make people aware of the free counselling services we offer and explain more about the proper procedure to follow in cases like sexual abuse.”

Moagi added they were there to also talk to men to not abuse young girls, as they are vulnerable. The nurse highlighted that residents who seek help with STIs, teenage pregnancy and sexual abuse could visit the Wannenburg Clinic.
“There are nurses at the clinic to help you. “Residents can also come to the BGH Care Centre daily,” said Moagi.
