EMPD’s Anti-High Speed Unit arrested four male drivers and two EMPD motor vehicles were damaged by a loose truck wheel on April 5, in Meadowdale and Germiston respectively.

EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said in a close call, while the EMPD Anti-High Speed Unit officers were processing lawbreakers on the N12 freeway, an 18-wheeler truck, travelling on the N3 freeway direction south just before the Rand Airport off-ramp, lost a wheel that rolled at high speed and crashed into two stationary EMPD vehicles.

It caused damage to both cars.

“The truck driver, who was not even aware of the incident, continued driving until he was flagged and cornered 3km away from the incident.”

Mokheseng added that EMPD officers also stopped a silver VW Polo hatchback and apprehended the 31-year old driver, for clocking 175 km/h, by the Germiston off-ramp zoned 120km/h.

In other cases, three drivers aged 28, 29 and 52 years old, driving sedans, were stopped and arrested on the N3 freeway direction south at Rand Airport off-ramp, for registering 162, 164 and 176 km/h, instead of 120km/h, respectively.

“They cited they were late for work and another claimed to be going to a family meeting. “The trio were accompanied to Germiston SAPS. They were arrested for reckless and negligent driving,” said Mokheseng.
