Ana taps to a win
She said dancing is her life because it allows her to express herself.
Assumption Convent School Grade 10 learner Ana Cordeiro secured the second position in her tap solo, Visualisation, in the junior category and came first in her tap duo, South of the Border, with Luke Scrase at The Dance World Cup South African Qualifiers at Lewende Woord Centurion.
This achievement qualifies her as a member of the South Africa team that will perform in England in August, either live or by video entry. The dance competition spans the globe, with more than 21 000 competitors from over 48 countries competing at qualifiers or the finals. The competition is aimed at children and youth dancers aged between five and 25.
Ana told GCN she has been dancing since the age of four, but her love for tap dancing started four years ago.
“I have danced at different dancing schools but four years ago I came across Red Robynne Studios, directed by Coralle Robynne Versfeld, who ignited the passion for dancing, especially tap dancing, in me. Dancing is my favourite thing to do,” said Ana.
She said dancing is her life because it allows her to express herself.
“I have never been so determined and easily motivated to work so hard in something. Even if I had the worst day, I know I can always go dancing and release all my emotions. No matter how tired or lazy I feel, it is always so easy for me to go and dance,” said Ana. “When I go to a competition, my priority is not to win but rather to walk off that stage and feel happy with my performance and know I gave it my all. However, being placed on a podium is such a wonderful feeling, it makes me feel proud and it shows all hard work allowed the judges to watch me and see I deserved a place on that podium,” said Ana.
She said she worked hard on her winning solo tap dance.

“I was very excited for the solo this year and wanted it to be different from any solo I have done before. I listened to hundreds of songs before deciding this was the right one. As soon as my dancing coach, Coralle Robynne Versfeld, played the song I knew this was my song,” said Ana.
Dance World Cup is not the first international dance competition that Ana has qualified for. In 2018 she qualified and attended IDO World Tap Dance Championships and in 2019 she qualified and attended IDO World Dance Championships.
