Police arrest 58 during the weekend

The arrested suspects face charges of murder, burglary and shoplifting, amongst other crimes.

The Sedibeng district police arrested 58 suspects for various crimes during the weekend of May 21 and 23.

They conducted several crime-prevention operations, including roadblocks, violence and crime prevention and tracing of wanted suspects.

They went on to visit tuck shops, second-hand goods dealers and liquor outlets to monitor compliance and attend to complaints from the community.

According to spokesperson Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, at least 482 people were searched in various areas, four illegal shebeens were closed and various brands of liquor were seized.

Police further seized various brands of illicit cigarettes.

The arrested suspects face charges of murder, burglary, shoplifting, robbery, house break-in, possession of illicit cigarettes, selling liquor without a licence and contravention of road traffic regulations among other crimes.

The Sedibeng district commissioner, Maj-Gen Zodwa Molefe, commended the law-enforcement agencies for providing the community with quality services and for assuring their safety.

The arrested suspects will appear in various magistrate’s courts within the district.
