Chris Hani SPAR responds to EFF’s demands

They committed to providing continuous training for the staff members and the supervisors in terms of personal relations and skills.

SUPERSPAR and the Ekurhuleni EFF have reached an agreement following a meeting at SPAR’s head office at Midrand on May 22.

The party marched to Chris Hani SPAR earlier in May, demanding accountability after an employee committed suicide.

The Ekurhuleni EFF labour desk head, Koketso Mojatau, told Kathorus MAIL it was proven that SPAR management had nothing to do with the suicide of their former employee, Phindile Khuzwayo.

This is according to the suicide note that Khuzwayo wrote.

“We have agreed that the supervisor may go back to work. SPAR provided the family with groceries and has made arrangements to hire Phindile’s mother, Phumzile,” said Mojatau.

“There was also an issue of an employee who got injured at work. They committed to attend to it. They committed to providing continuous training for the staff members and the supervisors in terms of personal relations and skills,” he said.

Mojatau said they are pleased with the outcome because SPAR was effective and they responded within the agreed time frame.

Phumzile said the family is taking things one step at a time, adding that although she is coping, it is not easy.
She said she is glad that steps to employ a family member, as suggested by the EFF, have begun.

“SPAR called on May 19 to request my documents. I submitted them, and they said they are looking for a position to place me.

“They predicted June 7. The date passed and I called them the following week; they said they would inform me immediately when there is space.

“At the moment, I have to wait because I understand that as a store they have a lot to deal with,” said Phumzile.

Chris Hani SPAR’s operations director Toli Maluleke said they have reached an amicable solution with the EFF and the Khuzwayo family.
