Khumalo residents to form structures to fight crime

Vesi advised community members to provide the station with any proof of corruption by police officers and to avoid bribing them.

Residents of Khumalo Section, Katlehong, recently held a community meeting about crime affecting residents, at Thuto Pele Secondary School on February 26.

The station commander of Katlehong South SAPS, Brig Albertina Vesi, attended the meeting, accompanied by the head of detectives Col Pillot Mogope, acting crime-prevention head Lt-Col Moganedi, FCS head Lt-Col Mdluli and corporate communications and CPF deputy chairperson Bishop Sibeko. Sontonga Mall centre manager Anne Dire and the ward councillor were also in the meeting.

According to Katlehong SAPS corporate communications officers Capt Mega Ndobe, the meeting was about crime around the section.

“The meeting organiser, Duma Tsotetsie, explained crime around their area, and the station commander held a question-and-answer session about corruption by police members and some alleged poor investigations including providing victims with feedback,” said Ndobe.

Vesi advised community members to provide the station with any proof of corruption by police officers and to avoid bribing them.

“You do not owe the police cooldrink,” Vesi emphasised.

She discouraged residents from getting involved in the looting and vandalism of the shops and malls.

Khumalo residents attended the community meeting at Thuto Pele Secondary School.

“You should fight crime with the involvement of the police and must not take the law into your own hands,” she said.

The police record case numbers that required follow-ups to hand over to the head of the detectives for further information.

The community of Khumalo appreciated the talk with the station commander.

“They promised to work hand in hand with the police and committed to forming structures to help fight crime. The structures will be spearheaded by CPF,” said Ndobe.

Vesi was happy to hear that there is an appreciation for the hard work and efforts of some police officers.
