The week aims at working toward an international society that is free of drug abuse.

In April, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) launched the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC).

Section 60 of the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act, No. 70 of 2008, states that a municipality must establish an LDAC to represent the municipality at the Provincial Substance Abuse Forum and give effect to the Provincial Drug Master Plan.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the committee has been conducting training since its induction.

“There were workshops on the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, the national drug master plan 2019 to 2024 and the GCR anti-substance abuse strategy to equip the committee as they will be preparing for the development of their anti-drug master plan,” said Dlamini.

The committee’s vision for the city is to create a city free of drug abuse.
