Ward 37 residents demand the removal of councillor

The petition, which has already collected hundreds of signatures, reflects the mounting frustration among community members

Residents of Ward 37 demand the removal of their ward councillor, Ivan Naidoo, citing dissatisfaction with his leadership and failure to address community issues.

A petition demanding his removal has garnered hundreds of signatures, reflecting widespread frustration among the community over poor service delivery, unresponsiveness, and broken promises.

“As residents of Ward 37, we have lost all faith in the council governing our ward. He has shown no ability to solve our problems,” said a resident, Pieter Van Rensburg.

The community claims that despite their patience, conditions have significantly worsened under Naidoo’s leadership.

Leon Jooste, another resident, expressed similar sentiments, noting they launched multiple petitions to address Naidoo’s ‘persistent failure’ to tackle urgent concerns.

“His negligence and incompetence have reached an intolerable level, leaving us feeling unheard and neglected,“ Jooste said.

Despite the petitions and widespread community support, the councillor has not responded.

The grievances outlined in the petition include unresolved service delivery issues such as potholes, electricity outages, and untrimmed trees damaging street poles.

“We believe we have a right to have a council member who is diligent and proactive in resolving our issues,“ Van Rensburg added.

In response to the rising discontent, Germiston City News spoke with Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, the speaker of the Ekurhuleni council, who explained no formal motion of no-confidence can be brought against a councillor.

“A councillor can only be replaced if they resign, pass away, or their party withdraws the councillor,” she stated, advising residents to contact the relevant political parties if they have concerns.
