Exercise programme improves mobility for seniors in Primrose
Regular sessions at Rest-a-While Service Centre are helping elderly residents boost strength, balance and confidence through guided exercises.
Liezel Hanneman continues to make a meaningful impact in the lives of senior citizens through regular exercise sessions at the Rest-a-While Service Centre in Primrose.
During a recent visit, elderly participants, along with some of their grandchildren, were seen actively taking part in posture-strengthening exercises to improve mobility and overall health.
The sessions, held every Monday from 10:00 to 11:00, are designed to keep members physically active, healthy, and engaged.

Hanneman says the progress made by participants has been remarkable. “Some of the members could not walk or stand upright before, but they are doing much better now,” she said.
“Seeing them walk on their own again is truly fulfilling. Some are even able to rotate their arms fully.”
As a cancer survivor herself, Hanneman often shares how exercise played a crucial role in her own recovery, encouraging others to stay active and adopt healthier lifestyles.
She also advises participants to maintain good nutrition and continue practising the exercises at home.
“It is important for older people to exercise. It not only helps prolong their lives, but also improves energy levels, strength, flexibility and balance,” she explained.
During the sessions, Hanneman guides participants through simple but effective movements, including posture and strength exercises.
“One of the exercises we do is the shoulder blade squeeze to strengthen postural muscles and stretch the chest,” she said.
“Sit up straight, rest your hands in your lap, and gently squeeze your shoulder blades together. Keep your shoulders relaxed and hold for a few seconds before releasing. Repeat a few times.”
The response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting improved mobility and confidence.
Hanneman says the programme will continue to evolve, with more exercises being introduced to further support the group’s progress.
