Bertha Gxowa Hospital celebrated the hard work of its employees during its annual Service Excellence Awards held at the Dr Clarence Mini Hall on Thursday, June 18.

The event brought staff members together for a day filled with joy, appreciation and jubilation as the hospital paused to recognise those who continue to serve patients with excellence, compassion and professionalism.

Smiling faces lit up the venue as employees shared in the celebratory atmosphere, applauding colleagues who have gone beyond the call of duty to support the hospital’s mission and strengthen healthcare services in the community.

Bertha Gxowa Hospital clinical manager Dr Thangelani Mabaso said the awards served as a reminder that every contribution matters.

Hospital CEO Lebogang Khumalo described the occasion as an important moment in the institution’s life.

“Today is a special occasion in the life of Bertha Gxowa Hospital. It is a moment to pause, reflect, celebrate achievement, and honour the extraordinary people who make our institution a beacon of hope and healing within our communities,” said Khumalo.

She said this year’s awards also carried personal significance, as it marked five years since she was entrusted with the responsibility of leading Bertha Gxowa Hospital as CEO.

“When I arrived, I found a team of dedicated professionals committed to serving our patients despite many challenges. Together, we embraced a vision of transformation, innovation, accountability, and people-centred care,” she said.

The ceremony also celebrated individual excellence, with Rachel Lekola named employee of the year.
Lekola said receiving the award was an emotional and unforgettable moment.

“I was very excited and quite emotional. Getting an award is wonderful. It is the first award I have ever received as an employee here at the hospital.

“I want to thank the CEO for recognising my work. I’m still in disbelief. It means a lot to me,” said Lekola.

The celebration served as a reminder of the important role healthcare workers play in ensuring that patients receive quality care, even under difficult circumstances.

Through the Service Excellence Awards, Bertha Gxowa Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to recognising staff members who continue to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives and the broader community.
