Gauteng SAPS targets armed crime, confiscates over 140 firearms

In a bold and relentless operation, Gauteng police have seized 141 unlicensed firearms—including automatic rifles and pistols—and 1,577 rounds of ammunition over just five weeks, striking a powerful blow against armed crime in the province.

Gauteng police have intensified the fight against armed crime by successfully confiscating 141 illegal firearms and 1577 rounds of ammunition between May 24 and June 27.

This major haul includes a wide range of weapons such as automatic rifles, complete firearms, revolvers, pistols, rifles, and shotguns, with several firearms having their serial numbers deliberately filed off to conceal their origins.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Mbuso Khumalo praised the relentless efforts of SAPS members, highlighting that these recoveries were made possible through proactive and targeted policing operations.

These include routine patrols, strategic crime prevention initiatives, intelligence-led searches, and dedicated firearms suppression operations across Gauteng.

“This significant seizure disrupts dangerous criminal networks and removes deadly weapons from our streets, making communities safer,” said Khumalo.

“Our officers continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment and professionalism in combating crime, ensuring the safety and security of all Gauteng residents.”

The Gauteng police remain resolute in their mission to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, which are often linked to violent crime, including armed robberies, gang-related violence, and murders.

By intercepting these weapons and ammunition, SAPS is not only protecting citizens but also dismantling the infrastructure of organised crime groups.

The department urges the public to continue co-operating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities and illegal firearms possession to help strengthen community safety.
