WATCH: Police arrest 225 suspects during Operation Shanela II in Ekurhuleni
A multi-disciplinary, intelligence-driven Operation Shanela II resulted in 225 arrests, roadblocks, liquor outlet closures and drug-related busts as SAPS intensified crime prevention efforts across Elsburg and Olifantsfontein.
The SAPS in Ekurhuleni recently hosted Operation Shanela II, led by Vosloorus station commander Brigadier Ntombizini Thethe, in Elsburg.
Members of the Social Crime Prevention Unit conducted awareness campaigns at shopping complexes in both Elsburg and Olifantsfontein, distributing pamphlets that highlighted the dangers of property crime, contact crime, and drug-related offences.
As part of the operation, Ekurhuleni District detectives carried out a tracing operation over two days, starting on February 18, which resulted in the arrest of 225 suspects.

The operation took place simultaneously in Elsburg and Olifantsfontein, and was guided by crime intelligence to target high-risk areas.
Thethe said that through this intelligence-driven effort, law enforcement agencies apprehended four suspects involved in drug dealing, one suspect in possession of unlicensed ammunition, and closed one liquor outlet.
“During roadblocks at the R554 in Elsburg and the R21 in Olifantsfontein, 31 traffic fines were issued, totalling R13 300.
“In addition, five liquor outlets were closed, two suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, one suspect for dealing in dagga, and another for drunk driving.

“Sixty-five undocumented individuals were also apprehended, while one second-hand goods dealership was fined for non-compliance. Law enforcement further impounded one motor vehicle and confiscated illicit creams and illicit cigarettes,” said Thethe.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole praised the dedication of the law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders involved in the operation, emphasising their commitment to reducing crime and enhancing safety in both Elsburg and Olifantsfontein.
