Gauteng MEC expresses shock after fatal stabbings of two learners

Two learners were killed in separate stabbing incidents in Johannesburg and Ennerdale, prompting the education department to offer support and call for stronger community action to protect children.

Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane has expressed deep shock and sadness following the fatal stabbings of two learners.

According to the South African Government News Agency, the first incident involved a 17-year-old Grade Eight learner from Forest High School who was severely assaulted and stabbed on March 20, in a park near the school after classes.

The learner was rushed to hospital and later transferred to another facility, where he succumbed to his injuries.

In a separate incident, a Grade 12 learner from Daleview Secondary School was fatally stabbed on Monday, March 23, while walking home through an open veld.

The circumstances surrounding both incidents are under investigation by the police.

The Gauteng Department of Education has since mobilised psycho-social support services to assist affected learners, teachers and the bereaved families.

“This is a deeply painful loss for our education community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and both school communities affected by these tragedies,” said Chiloane.

He added that violence against learners, whether inside or outside school premises, is unacceptable.

“We call on communities to work closely with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, and to stand united in protecting our children so that our schools remain safe spaces for teaching and learning,” he said.
