Operation Shanela yields results in Primrose

Suspects were arrested for various crimes, including possession of drugs, selling liquor without a license, possession of counterfeit goods and illegal immigration.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole led the weekly Operation Shanela II in Primrose on May 7.

The operation yielded positive results, with 299 suspects arrested in Ekurhuleni.

The suspects were arrested for various crimes, including possession of drugs, selling liquor without a license, possession of counterfeit goods and illegal immigration.

Residents were taken for ffingerprint checks.

The detectives across Ekurhuleni policing precincts managed to arrest a total of 233 suspects for various offences that included contact crime, property crime, and gender-based violence.

Sithole led these continuous operations in Primrose and Dunnotar, whereby 41 suspects were arrested for being illegal immigrants, seven for possession of drugs and seven for counterfeit goods. One stolen motor vehicle was recovered, and 24 traffic fines were issued to the value of R10 600.

“In parallel to Operation Shanela II, members of social crime prevention and other stakeholders visited schools for crime awareness talks and searches. Community imbizos were conducted to address concerns raised by community members,” said Sithole.

“Law enforcement authorities conducted extensive operations resulting in a total of 744 persons searched and 209 vehicles searched, while 45 vehicles were tested through the LPR system.

“The operation included one roadblock and one VCP, with 15 ARTO fines issued to the value of R5 550. Officers visited 12 liquor outlets, of which two were closed. They also inspected 10 second-hand goods dealers.”

She said a total of 15 hotspots were patrolled, alongside 209 stop-and-search operations.

“In addition, 43 ATMs and 47 filling stations were patrolled and visited, while 27 premises were searched, including 12 illicit drug premises.

“Authorities distributed 200 pamphlets during one community imbizo and awareness campaign.

“Furthermore, 123 PVS operations were conducted, 10 schools were visited, and one school was searched.

“Officers also visited five shopping complexes and malls, three spaza shops, and 10 taxi ranks, while 54 undocumented persons were checked during the operation,” said Sithole.

“In the CI-PRE operations, officers seized 37g of nyaope, 7g of rock cocaine, 22 full Mandrax tablets, 14 quarter Mandrax tablets, and 15g of crystal meth, in addition to confiscating cash,” said Sithole.

The Ekurhuleni district commissioner thanked the stakeholders and other law enforcement agencies for their commitment shown in both the operations that led to the successes.
