Ekurhuleni MMC highlights sewer blockage impact in Marathon informal settlement

MMC for Operations and Maintenance Nomadlozi Nkosi has urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly after frontline teams raised concerns about sewer blockages caused by foreign objects.

MMC for Operations and Maintenance Alderman Nomadlozi Nkosi conducted an oversight visit to the Marathon informal settlement, where she engaged with frontline personnel on daily operations and service delivery challenges.

According to a statement by the City of Ekurhuleni, the visit forms part of ongoing efforts to assess infrastructure conditions and improve service delivery in communities.

During the engagement, municipal teams highlighted the growing problem of foreign objects being discarded into drainage systems, noting that many blockages are caused by human behaviour rather than infrastructure failure.

Officials warned that improper waste disposal has serious consequences, including sewer overflows, property damage and potential health risks.

The City emphasised that items thrown into sewer systems do not disappear, but often lead to backflows and flooding that affect surrounding households.

Nkosi called on residents to take responsibility for proper waste disposal, noting that protecting infrastructure is a shared responsibility.

The City said continued awareness and community cooperation are essential to preventing blockages and maintaining safe, functional neighbourhoods.
