Ekurhuleni honours late Alderman Bennet Nikani
Council has announced a civic funeral for the late Alderman Bennet Nikani, whose dedication to community development and public service was honoured during a special tribute in Germiston.
The City of Ekurhuleni paid tribute to the late Alderman Bennet Nikani during a special council sitting held at the Germiston New Council Chambers on June 3.
Councillors gathered to honour and remember Nikani, who passed away on May 29 after a short illness.
The proceedings included a candle-lighting ceremony led by the Whip of Council, symbolising the lasting impact of Nikani’s service to residents and communities across Ekurhuleni.
Nikani was remembered as a committed ANC member who dedicated his life to serving others. Through his involvement in community-based self-defence units, he championed values of self-reliance, responsibility and community empowerment.
Speakers reflected on his contribution to local development and his efforts to strengthen communities through active civic participation.
As a mark of respect, the Whip of Council and Executive Mayor Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza presented a wreath to the Nikani family during the tribute.
Council also announced that a civic funeral will be held in honour of Nikani, recognising his years of service and commitment to the people of Ekurhuleni.
The City described him as a leader whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations and whose contribution to community development will not be forgotten.
Nikani is survived by his family, friends and colleagues, who continue to mourn the loss of a respected community leader and public servant
