Ekurhuleni council fails to pass 2026/27 budget

Finance MMC urged to return with a revised budget that can secure council support and address key service delivery needs.

The City of Ekurhuleni has failed to approve its 2026/27 budget after the proposed financial plan did not secure the required majority during an extraordinary council sitting on June 4.

During a show-of-hands vote, 96 councillors voted in favour of the budget, while 105 voted against it. A small number of councillors abstained, resulting in the budget being rejected.

MMC for Finance Jongizizwe Dlabathi has been tasked with revising the budget after council instructed the administration to return with a more inclusive financial plan.

The vote follows a previous council meeting last week in which the budget was not approved after councillors sought legal advice on the voting process.

Following the latest outcome, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance Jongizizwe Dlabathi has been instructed to return to the drawing board and revise the budget.

Council has called for a more inclusive and responsive financial plan that better reflects community needs and prioritises service delivery.

The administration is expected to present a revised budget to council at a later date for consideration and approval.
