DA backs revised Ekurhuleni budget to avoid governance crisis
Amendments aimed at improving fiscal discipline and prioritising essential services have secured opposition support ahead of a crucial council vote.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that it will support the revised City of Ekurhuleni budget after key amendments were made to address concerns over spending and service delivery.
Speaking ahead of the council sitting on June 23, DA federal chairperson Solly Msimanga said the party had resolved to vote in favour of the revised municipal budget, citing significant improvements that demonstrate greater fiscal responsibility.
According to Msimanga, the DA had initially raised serious concerns about the original budget, particularly regarding what it viewed as wasteful expenditure and insufficient prioritisation of basic services for residents.

However, he said the revised budget reflects meaningful progress following engagements between the administration and opposition parties.
“The adjustments made to the budget signal a willingness by the administration to listen and act in the best interests of residents,” said Msimanga.
He added that the amendments strengthen the city’s commitment to responsible governance while ensuring that service delivery remains a priority.
Msimanga also argued that supporting the revised budget would help maintain stability within the council and prevent disruption to municipal operations.
The revised budget is expected to be debated and voted on during the council sitting, where political parties will determine the financial framework that will guide the city’s spending and service delivery programmes for the coming financial year.
