Germiston Hawks arrest police sergeant and his accomplice for corruption

Zwane allegedly paid a bribe of R5 000 for the release of her boyfriend.

The Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit arrested Keabetswe Kgope (35), a police officer who holds the rank of a sergeant, and Elizabeth Zwane (52) on September 12 on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

The duo appeared before the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court on the same day as their arrest and were each granted bail of R2 000.

Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela, the spokesperson for Gauteng Hawks, said officials of Leeuwkop Prison arrested two suspects in October 2020 after they allegedly attempted to smuggle drugs into the prison.

“They reported the matter at the Sandton Police Station and two officers at the station attended to it.

“One suspect allegedly called his girlfriend, Elizabeth Zwane, to inform her about his arrest.

“When Zwane arrived at the police station, she allegedly offered R5 000 to the officers to release her partner,” said Mavimbela.

When officials from the prison followed up on the case, they found the police officers had released the one suspect.

They reported the matter to the Hawks, who investigated it and subsequently led to the arrest of the two suspects.

Their case was postponed to October 3.
