Rest-a-While Service Centre needs help with funding
"We try to assist with meals and groceries because we know it goes a long way."
Rest-a-While Service Centre of the Aged’s manager Trudy Carreira said times are hard and the centre needs support.
“We have not received any funding. We have been relying on community donations to keep our doors open and cater for the elderly,” said Carreira.
She said the funding stopped in April.
“It has been tough for the past few months but we are doing everything in our power to keep our doors open.

“We sell food at our second-hand shop and we host bingo nights. We need help otherwise the centre will be closed,” said Carreira.
She said several elderly people rely on the centre for meals. “Some elderly can’t afford much and some don’t even have families.
“We try to assist with meals and groceries because we know it goes a long way,” said Carreira.
The centre has been around for 57 years.

It was formed by a group of women who played cards together once a week and enjoyed socialising over a cup of tea. They saw the greater need for a group like this in the community of Germiston.
The main objective of the service centre is to supply well-balanced cooked meals to the elderly in Primrose and the surrounding areas.
“This is a home for many elderly in our community. It’s a place for them to come and enjoy themselves and keep active.
We have not been able to do many of our activities because of money but with donations, we can start doing them again,” said Carreira.
“Every donation counts because it can be groceries, money or items to resell. We also want to ask our residents to support our recycling project, which is just outside our premises,” said Carreira.

She also requested the community to support Adopt a Gogo and Back-a-Buddy.
“These projects support the elderly who come to the home,” said Carreira.
