Health awareness event hosted at Bertha Gxowa

The audience received instruction on proper disposal of medical waste and how to use personal protective equipment.

Forensic medical services hosted an occupational health and safety awareness event at Dr Clarence Mini Hall at the Bertha Gxowa Hospital on October 20.

The MEC of Health Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko awarded the safety, health and environmental (SHE) representatives who work to ensure that facilities comply with the OHS regulations.

They taught on how to wear personal protective equipment.

Among the recipients from Germiston was Happy Elizabeth Mokoena, SHE representative at Germiston Forensic Pathology Services.

The day also ensured that their colleagues’ well-being was prioritised in the workplace.

On behalf of Buhle Waste, Nosipho Mabuyakhulu, Geozone Environmental facilitator, demonstrated how to properly dispose of medical waste.

She advised returning any expired medication to the doctor so it can be disposed of properly.

Maureen Ntuli, occupational health nurse, said medical waste that is not disposed of causes environmental and health hazards.

“The risk lies in the fact that bodies in state mortuaries are often not diagnosed for the diseases they may contain. In this kind of work, personal protective equipment is essential,” said Ntuli.
