Motorists urged to more vigilant on the roads by EMPD

Do not stop for anyone on the road, especially at night unless you are being stopped at a roadblock by a police officers.

The EMPD is cautioning motorists to stay safe on the roads especially when embarking on a long-distance trip.

• Beware of hitchhikers, because they might be criminals wanting to rob you of your belongings or even hijack your car.

• Make sure that whenever you feel tired, you only stop at the garage or wherever it’s safe to do so.

• Be careful of distractions on the road.

• Make sure that you always put your valuable belongings in the boot of your car.

• Always check your car to see if it’s properly locked whenever you park it to go and do something, check all the doors if you must.

• If a motorist tries to pull you over on the road or try to show you that there’s something wrong with your car, just drive to the nearest police station or somewhere safe to avoid being robbed or hijacked.

• Do not stop for anyone on the road, especially at night unless you are being stopped at a roadblock by a police officers.

“If you are being stopped by a police officer and there’s no roadblock and you don’t feel safe, you can indicate to them that you’re driving to a place where you will feel safe to stop and that they must follow you,” said the EMPD spokesperson, Kelebogile Thepa.
