Central Gauteng Athletics hosts its first league

The international athlete seems to be in great physical form and ready to yet again to make history in this year’s season.

Central Gauteng Athletics hosted its first 2024 track and field league meeting on January 20 at Germiston Stadium.

This league was supported by athletes and spectators including athletes from other provinces.

One of the phenomenal events was the middle distance 800m senior men’s event, which CGA’s elite athlete Ryan Mphahlele of UJ dominated from start to finish, clocking 1:52.19.

The international athlete seems to be in great physical form and ready to yet again to make history in this year’s season.

Mphahlele ‘s teammate Nicholas Whittaker finished second in 1:54.83, and in third position in 1:55.43 was Brandon Viljoen of Nedbank.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) welcomed their athletes at the Germiston Stadium in their first league.

Among the favourite races of the day was the 100m senior women’s sprints with UJ dominating the event.

Kayla la Grange claimed first place, clocking an amazing time of 11.75, finishing second was her teammate Chante Botha clocking 13.12.

Muya Olivia Kalanga also from UJ finished third in a time of 13.31.

In the field events, Nories took a clean sweep in the girl’s U16 discus, taking three medal positions with Marni Vermaas throwing a distance of 34.25m to win the event.

In second place was her teammate Chanlee Landsberg with a distance of 32.77m. Third was Livah Carney with a distance of 32.08m.

With three more leagues to go this season, CGA chairperson Maggie Dicks said she looks forward to seeing more athletes competing for the province to field a strong team at the national championships.

“The entry fee for athletes is R30 and R50 for spectators. Athletes must report one hour before their respective event to the outside callroom.

“No entry fee for CGA affiliated coaches. Coaches will be required to produce an affiliation card at the gate. No coach will be allowed inside the competition area,” said Dicks.

“Looking forward to seeing you on February 3 at Germiston Stadium,” said Dicks.
