Cricket team takes one-day cup honours at Willowmoore Park

The three-day series encounter ended in a draw before Mpumalanga Rhinos won the one-day cup match by 84 runs on March 3.

WP Myburgh and Donovan du Randt scored a century each for the Eastern Storm on day three of their drawn CSA three-day division two Colts match against Mpumalanga Rhinos at Willowmoore Park on March 2.

Myburgh came in at fourth and watched as his partners left the crease without making an impact, but he remained resolute in an innings built on caution and grit. He scored 116 off 226, including 14 boundaries, before falling to Gregory Mahlikwana in the 90th over.

All-rounder Du Randt came in late and tormented the already exhausted Rhinos attack with a clinical unbeaten 89-ball 105 to add significantly to his team’s tally.

Nhlanhla Mashego shared a 57-run partnership with WP Myburgh.

His knock included 10 boundaries and six maximums as he combined for 90 with Myburgh for the eighth wicket to help the Storm to 406/9.

After losing the toss on day one (February 29), the hosts were forced to play catch-up cricket after being dismissed for 184, with Rhinos bowlers Kieran Kenny (4/32), Luco van der Walt (2/37), and Lindokuhle Pawuli (2/44) the chief tormentors.

The Rhinos ended their innings with a 112-run lead after being dismissed for 296, thanks to half-centuries from Zuan Swart (57), Muhammed Mayet (67) and Mohamad Cook (64 off 54).

Kieran Keeny took a total of seven wickets in the three-day series match.

Myburgh and Shaveer Khan took three wickets each for the hosts, while Amaan Khan and Nyiko Baloyi added two apiece.

The Storm’s second innings began positively with great strokes from Thulani Thembela (38) and Sabelo Mabanga (47).

However, Junior Makua and Kenny troubled the top order when they combined to dismiss Van Dyk (14), Mabanga and Thembela.

Myburgh came in and steadied the ship as he put on 57 for the fifth wicket with Nhlanhla Mashego (37) before Du Randt came on to frustrate the Rhinos attack with a well-crafted 100.
