City Speaker urges caution as Rondebult sinkhole worsens

Some 20 months after forming, the Rondebult Road sinkhole continues to expand, posing a serious threat to the area.

Speaker of Council Clr Nthabiseng Tshivhenga did an urgent oversight inspection at the rapidly expanding Rondebult Road sinkhole, which has become a significant public safety hazard.

Tshivhenga warned residents to steer clear of the area after seeing pedestrians ignore the safety barriers.

“The sinkhole’s growth is alarming, and it poses an immediate threat to infrastructure and public safety,” she emphasised.

The residents of wards 32 and 33 have voiced concerns over disruptions to commuting and local businesses, with the road closure worsening traffic congestion.

“Residents are frustrated by the impact on daily commutes, especially during morning traffic, and the strain on businesses in the area,” Tshivhenga said.

The sinkhole first appeared nearly 20 months ago, leading to a partial closure of Rondebult Road.

Despite investigations by the city into potential solutions, the sinkhole has since expanded, further destabilising the road.

Responsibility for repairs remains in dispute, though Tshivhenga said a co-ordinated, multi-departmental approach would be necessary.

“Funding constraints complicate the issue, and involvement from multiple departments is essential for resolution,” she stated.

Illegal mining is suspected to be a cause because mining shafts could be contributing to the ground collapse.

The water-logged hole continues to gradually swallow the sub-grade layer of the northbound carriageway, threatening to submerge the entire road.

“With the rainy season beginning, the risk of accelerated erosion is high, potentially endangering the nearby bridge.

“The rainy season intensifies the erosion risk, placing additional strain on an already compromised structure,” Tshivhenga warned.

Addressing motorists’ frustrations, Tshivhenga acknowledged the road closure’s impact on traffic and local businesses.
