Ekurhuleni concerned about high rates of teenage pregnancies

Parents, guardians, families and professionals are encouraged to play their role in ensuring that their children do not fall victim to teenage pregnancy. The City of Ekurhuleni has noted an alarming increase in rates of teenage pregnancies.

Bridget Thusi, the MMC for Health and Social Services and Nomadlozi Nkosi MMC for Developmental Planning and Real Estate conducted the multi-sectoral Teenage Pregnancy Seminar to reduce the alarming increase in teenage pregnancy in Ekurhuleni.

The Gauteng Department of Health reports there were 24 941 deliveries and pregnancy terminations in Gauteng from 2022 to 2023, which is 2% more than the 24 445 cases recorded the year before.

Nomadlozi said that to respond to these concerning numbers, the city identified the need for efficient intervention techniques to help young people dealing with these issues.

β€œIt is important to encourage young people to use the Youth Zones, offered at all healthcare facilities. These areas are intended to give young people easier access to health information and services so they can make wise decisions about their sexual health,” Nomadlozi said.

Thusi echoed these remarks when she said the city was dedicated to working with the Gauteng Government to create practical plans and regulations that support health and wellness objectives for the years 2023 to 2028.

These policies will create an environment where young individuals feel empowered to seek information and support concerning sexual and reproductive health, as well as mental health resources,” she expressed.

By addressing both urgent issues and establishing the groundwork for long-term solutions, the seminar is a step towards creating a community that places a high priority on the health and well-being of its young people.
