SA Guide-Dogs Association seeks puppy raisers to help change lives

Love puppies and want to make a difference? The SA Guide-Dogs Association is calling on dedicated dog lovers to become puppy raisers - helping to train future guide dogs that will transform the lives of visually impaired people.

The South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind is appealing to dog lovers to become puppy raisers and help transform the lives of people with visual impairments.

Residents passionate about working with puppies can join the programme, which begins when puppies are around eight weeks old and continues until they are about 16 months old.

During this period, puppy raisers will attend weekly training sessions at the association’s facility and in public spaces.

The association encourages raisers to involve their puppies in everyday activities to aid social development, though certain restrictions apply during the first 16 weeks.

Once the puppies reach 16 months, they will return to the centre for formal guide dog training, but may still spend weekends and holidays with their puppy raisers.

“Once training is complete, we will match the dog with a new owner, ready to bring joy to another family,” the association said.
