Jeppe Girls turns 106: A legacy of inspiring young women
Jeppe High School for Girls celebrates 106 years of excellence, proudly upholding its legacy of academic achievement, tradition, and community service while embracing innovation for future generations.
This week marks a remarkable milestone for Jeppe High School for Girls as it celebrates 106 years of educating and empowering young women.
Founded in 1919, the school has grown into a beacon of academic excellence, social responsibility, and spirited community engagement. Rooted in proud traditions yet forward-thinking in its approach, Jeppe Girls continues to embody its motto, Forti Nihil Difficilius — “Nothing is too difficult for the brave.”
Over the decades, the school has earned a reputation as one of South Africa’s top-performing academic institutions.
As a pilot Independent Examinations Board (IEB) centre, Jeppe Girls proudly maintains a 100% matric pass rate spanning more than 30 consecutive years. Its learners consistently go on to study at leading universities both locally and abroad.

The school’s culture extends well beyond the classroom. Jeppe Girls is home to a dynamic and inclusive sporting spirit, with learners excelling in hockey, netball, swimming, cricket, athletics, tennis and more.
A recent collaboration with Jeppe High School for Boys and Parktown schools saw learners join forces for a special sports event aimed at raising awareness around gender-based violence — a powerful example of unity through purpose.
In the arts, the Jeppe spirit shines just as brightly. This year’s theatrical production of Matilda drew widespread acclaim and showcased the school’s vibrant performing arts programme.

Jeppe Girls also received the prestigious 5FM Spirit Award in recognition of its inclusive, energetic school culture.
The past year has brought major developments to the campus. In March 2024, the school unveiled Somerset House, a secure and modern boarding facility that provides a supportive home away from home.

A new pedestrian bridge now spans Roberts Avenue, offering safer access to the sports fields. Additional projects underway include a state-of-the-art Performing Arts and Wellness Centre, a STEM Hub, a solar energy system, and a dedicated school bus service — all reflecting the school’s commitment to a sustainable and holistic learning environment.

At the heart of Jeppe Girls is its community — resilient, principled, and united. The Jeppe sisterhood is a living legacy, supported by a vibrant Old Girls’ network that mentors, guides, and financially supports current learners, reinforcing the school’s deep-rooted ethos of upliftment and leadership.
The school also remains deeply committed to social responsibility. Weekly sandwich drives feed hundreds of children in nearby communities, while learners knit and donate blankets, scarves and squares to those in need — a hands-on expression of the belief that compassion must be lived.
None of these achievements would be possible without the unwavering commitment of the school’s staff. From teachers to support teams, every member of the Jeppe community plays an essential role in maintaining a safe, nurturing, and inspiring space for learning.
