Human resources practitioner Siyabonga Xaba says that many job seekers make avoidable mistakes on their CVs, which can ruin their chances of securing employment.
“A CV is a professional representation of who you are and what you can do,” explained Xaba. “Spelling errors, poor sentence construction, and other mistakes can easily disqualify even well-qualified candidates.”
He advised that CVs should be customised to suit the specific job one is applying for.
“If the job application specifies a particular CV format, cover letter, or number of pages, it’s important to follow those instructions exactly,” he said.
“Highlight your skills, experience, education, accomplishments, references, and other relevant details that the employer may require,” he said.
“Avoid adding your ID number, gender, marital status, or a photo unless the job ad specifically asks for it.”
Xaba noted that many people struggle with writing motivational letters.
“In your letter, try to address it to a specific person if possible. Show that you understand the company and the job role. Express your passion, highlight your strengths, and explain why you are the right candidate,” he said.
He added that interview preparation is just as crucial as a strong CV and cover letter.
“Research the company beforehand, dress appropriately, and arrive early. Be confident, but always remain respectful,” he concluded.
