Local artists celebrated in 1st annual awards

South African Gwijo Awards shine spotlight on traditional acappella talent.

The South African Gwijo Awards (SAGA) were held in Katlehong on October 4, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Gwijo.

Gwijo is a traditional musical style often overlooked in mainstream music. The awards aimed to honour and elevate this a cappella genre that relies solely on harmonised vocal performance.

Rooted deeply in South African culture, Gwijo is characterised by its unique a cappella style, where groups use only their voices to create rhythmic harmonies.

Mamii and Jr Intelezi Yezitha won the best Gwijo remix award.

Traditionally sung in social or protest settings, it has evolved into a cultural movement sweeping across the country’s townships.

Sipho Mthembu, co-founder of the awards and a native of Katlehong, expressed pride in hosting the event in his hometown alongside other co-founders Nonhlanhla Msimango, Andile Mzileni and Keletso Monyela. He also founded Ekhaya Gwijo Healers, a community-based group that celebrated its first anniversary this past July.

His goal is to inspire the youth and steer them away from negative influences through music.

“We saw a need to pull children toward something they already love,” said Mthembu.

“We’re giving them the platform and resources to follow their dreams and pursue their talents.”

He noted the positive impact Gwijo has had on young people, saying, “When we formed Ekhaya Gwijo, we had amazing talent joining in. Seeing children focus on music and the light that comes to their faces when they practice and perform is amazing.”

This year marked the first-ever national Gwijo Awards, with participants from provinces including the Free State, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape. The voting process was facilitated through their website and amplified via social media.

Thunder Healer’s won the best Gwijo collaboration award.

“We had voters from different parts of the world. Top voters were from South Africa followed by the United States. In total, we had voters from nine countries,” said Mthembu.

“This positions the country on a global stage. We need to package our talents and export them beyond our borders.”

“Looking ahead, we have plans for a groundbreaking programme where young Gwijo artists can write and record original music, moving beyond cover renditions. Across the country, only a few groups are doing this. The goal is to formalise the genre and develop original content, giving Gwijo a modern professional platform.”

This year’s awards drew approximately 250 entries, a testament to the growing interest and talent across the country.

“The Free State emerged as the big winner, securing three major awards, while Gauteng and the Eastern Cape shared the remaining honours. Winners received a trophy, certificate and SAGA-branded medal,” explained Mthembu.

The awards featured 11 categories, with organisers aiming to expand further in 2026. “We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the newly formed Gwijo Association, a collective of dedicated adults committed to supporting Gwijo groups across the country.

Their invaluable contribution to the success of the SAGA cannot be overstated. The Association provided psychosocial support, guidance and funding that helped make this event a reality.

Their efforts reflect a deep commitment to nurturing the cultural and emotional well-being of Gwijo artists, and we are truly grateful for their partnership,” said Mthembu.
