Education department refutes fake news on school reopening dates

The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that all public schools to reopen as planned today, October 13, urging parents and learners to ignore misleading messages circulating online.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has strongly condemned false reports spreading on social media claiming that public schools will not reopen as scheduled for the fourth term.

According to a statement issued on Saturday, the DBE confirmed that all public schools will reopen as planned on October 13, in line with the official school calendar.

“The DBE notes with concern the circulation of fake news on social media and other unofficial platforms suggesting changes to the reopening dates of schools for the fourth term.

The department wishes to clarify unequivocally that these messages are false and misleading,” a statement from the department read.

The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, appealed to the public to help prevent the spread of misinformation that causes unnecessary panic among parents, learners, and educators.

“Education is a shared national responsibility. False information disrupts schools, confuses parents, and undermines the hard work of our teachers and learners.

“We appeal to every South African to be vigilant, to verify before sharing, and to help us protect the academic calendar and the upcoming National Senior Certificate examinations,” said Gwarube.

Rely on official updates

The department urged South Africans to only trust official communication channels, including the DBE website (www.education.gov.za), verified social media pages, and provincial education department platforms.

The DBE thanked parents, teachers, learners and school management teams for their continued support, especially as the academic year enters its final stretch.

Matrics urged to stay focused

With the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams starting on Monday, 21 October, the department encouraged Grade 12 learners to remain focused and make use of all available resources, such as:

* Revision guides and materials
* Radio and online lessons
* School-based catch-up programmes and study camps

“We are fully prepared for the reopening and the final term. Let us continue working together to ensure the Class of 2025 ends the year strong,” the department concluded.
