Wadeville Action Group leads drive to restore infrastructure and stability

WAG is currently advancing several key initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, sustainability, and economic resilience in the area.

The Wadeville Action Group (WAG) is making meaningful strides in addressing the pressing service delivery and infrastructure challenges affecting the Wadeville industrial area.

Through strong partnerships with the City of Ekurhuleni and organisations such as the National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC), WAG is helping restore stability, strengthen local infrastructure, and position Wadeville as a thriving, resilient industrial hub.

Tackling infrastructure challenges

Wadeville has faced persistent service delivery issues in recent years, particularly around water and electricity supply. While the water situation has stabilised through joint efforts with the City, electricity remains a major concern for local businesses.

To address this, WAG is compiling a comprehensive report quantifying the financial losses suffered by businesses due to frequent power outages. This data will serve as an advocacy tool to push for long-term, sustainable solutions.

During outages, WAG’s dedicated team provides on-the-ground support to the city by supplying access, digging equipment, and other resources to speed up power restoration.

Regular communication with the city’s power department ensures that critical faults, such as vault-related issues, are escalated promptly and addressed efficiently.

“We remain committed to working closely with all stakeholders to improve infrastructure reliability and support the Wadeville business community,” said WAG chairperson Malcolm Moriarty.

Special programmes building a stronger Wadeville
WAG is advancing several key initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, sustainability, and economic resilience in the area.

Economic impact study
The group has begun an economic impact study to assess the cost of power disruptions on local enterprises.
Ongoing engagements with stakeholders and efforts to secure funding will ensure the report provides credible data for future advocacy and infrastructure investment.

CCTV network project
To strengthen security, WAG has initiated discussions with several security companies to develop a CCTV network across Wadeville. Quotations have been received, and groundwork completed. The next phase is securing the necessary funding to roll out the project in stages.

Partnership with the NCPC
WAG’s collaboration with the National Cleaner Production Centre continues to yield practical benefits for Wadeville. This partnership has elevated the area’s profile, opened doors to key stakeholders, and enabled the implementation of innovative, sustainable solutions for ongoing challenges.

Partnerships and collaboration driving progress
Through close cooperation with the city, Moriarty said WAG has already achieved visible improvements across the area:
Numerous potholes have been repaired and road markings repainted.
Service delivery issues are being escalated and resolved more efficiently.

Additional cleaning staff have been deployed by the city to keep Wadeville’s public areas clean and well-maintained.

“These efforts have contributed to a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming industrial environment,” said Moriarty.

Community involvement: strength in numbers
Moriarty said WAG continues to call on local businesses and residents to join the movement for positive change. “Membership provides an opportunity to contribute directly to Wadeville’s development while staying informed about important updates in the area,” said Moriarty.

Benefits of joining WAG:
• Be part of a united effort to improve infrastructure and service delivery.
• Access reliable updates and insights about community progress.
Support initiatives for a cleaner, safer Wadeville.
Help shape the future of one of Ekurhuleni’s most important industrial zones.

WAG’s goal is to reach a 51% membership base, enabling the organisation to formalise its partnership with the City through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), a crucial step towards sustained progress.
As part of its local empowerment strategy, WAG also employs cleaning and greening teams from within Wadeville. These teams work daily to clean, cut, and maintain public spaces, playing a vital role in creating a pleasant environment for all who live and work in the area.

Achievements since inception
Since its inception, WAG’s proactive approach has led to numerous visible improvements:
• Stable water supply across Wadeville
• Fully operational traffic lights
• Repainted road markings for better visibility
• Repaired water leaks, sidewalks, and manholes
• Shorter power outage turnaround times
• Regularly cleaned and greened main entry points
• Ongoing efforts to address illegal dumping and improve safety

“These successes underscore the effectiveness of collaboration between businesses, residents, and government stakeholders,” said Moriarty.

Future vision: a united Wadeville

WAG’s membership has grown to 86 members, moving closer to the goal of 120. Achieving 51% participation will unlock access to national infrastructure funding and enable the signing of a formal partnership with the City.

By continuing to grow its membership base and strengthen partnerships, WAG is laying the foundation for a stronger, more sustainable future, ensuring that Wadeville remains a place where businesses can thrive and the community can take pride.
