Katlehong’s youngest special school principal leads push for inclusive education

At just 31 years young, Mendy Welcome is already making a mark in the field of special education.

As the new principal of Ezibeleni School for the Physically Impaired in Katlehong, he is quickly making waves in the education sector.

With a steadfast commitment to creating inclusive and supportive learning environments, Welcome’s work focuses on empowering students with diverse abilities to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The former Ithembelihle Lsen School deputy principal began his educational career at the Durban University of Technology, earning a Junior Bachelor of Education with a specialisation in inclusive education and autism.

He honed his leadership skills with an honours in education leadership, preparing him for a dynamic career in educational administration and advocacy.

Welcome’s career has spanned multiple roles in special schools, reflecting his hands-on experience and dedication.

He began his career as a teacher at Dukathole Special School from 2016 to 2019, where he delivered specialised instruction, developed individualised education plans, and promoted inclusive classroom practices.

From 2019 to 2022, he advanced to departmental head at Dukathole Special School, overseeing curriculum implementation, coordinating departmental activities, and enhancing teaching strategies for special needs learners.

Most recently, from 2022 to 2025, he served as deputy principal at Ithembelihle LSEN School, leading school administration, managing staff development, and supporting inclusive education initiatives.

His progressive experience has provided him with an in-depth understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within special education.

Welcome is not only a national leader but also contributes to disability policy development internationally. He also prides himself on being the youngest principal in Gauteng Special School.

“I have worked with the Global Disability Organisation in Germany and with Education International in Denmark, where I have been an active member of the Inclusive Education Task Team,” said Welcome.

“My expertise spans inclusive education policies, disability advocacy, and curriculum development for learners with diverse needs. I am a committed educator and trainer,” said Welcome.

“Welcome is affiliated with SADTU, specialising in robotics master trainer, multi-grade master trainer, AFL master trainer, and case management.”

His professional focus remains on empowering educators, promoting inclusive practices, and ensuring that learners with disabilities have access to quality education.

He aspires to transform the school into a leading institution while promoting sports participation and skill development among students.

“Beyond my professional roles, I dream of securing sponsorships and donations to support needy learners, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their growth and potential,” said Welcome.
