Outstanding healthcare workers honoured at Ekurhuleni District Health Services awards
The Ekurhuleni District Health Services celebrated excellence at the 2025 Service Excellence Awards.
The Ekurhuleni District Health Services (EDHS) 2025 Service Excellence Awards were held at the Birchwood Hotel to honour excellence and dedication in the health sector.
The annual event brought together healthcare professionals, leaders and partners from across the district to celebrate individuals and teams that demonstrated exceptional service, innovation and commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare.

The event was led by EDHS acting chief director, Simon Choma, who said, “The ceremony highlighted those who consistently go the extra mile for patients and communities, showcasing the dedication that continues to strengthen the district’s health system.”

Among the winners was Sister Hazel Moagi, the facility manager at the Clinical Forensic Medical Services, Bertha Gxowa Care Centre.
Already named the 2025 Marilyn Lahana Caring Award Gauteng winner weeks prior to the ceremony, Moagi added another accolade to her achievements by winning the nursing leadership category.

She was followed by Ororiseng Thobega, an assistant manager: Primary Health Care, in second, and Thembisile Zamisa, an assistant manager: Primary Health Care, in third.
In the non-clinical leadership category, April Saul from Health Promotion won the Leadership Award.
Dr Ozoemena Joan Ibeziako from the Family Medicine Department/Ward won the doctor’s leadership category as the sole entrant.

Leadership: clinical support and therapeutic services
• First: Goolam Mavimbela, therapeutic services;
• Second: Deon Van Vuuren, Nigel Depot;
• Third: Keneilwe Khoza, X-ray department.
Administrative staff leadership
• First: Essau Mothebe, health information manager;
• Second: Fumane Sephula, administration;
• Third: Portia Moraba, risk unit.

Professional nurses category
• First: Gertrude Makhene, quality assurance.
• Second: Jeanette Nxumalo, maternal, child and women’s health;
• Third: Thuli Leso, eye care.
The awards reaffirmed EDHS’s commitment to recognising excellence and motivating healthcare professionals who serve communities with passion, integrity, and professionalism.
