Epworth Children’s Home appeals for Back-to-School support
Epworth Children’s Village is calling on the community to help provide school uniforms, stationery, shoes, and financial support for 79 vulnerable children as the new school year begins.
Epworth Children’s Home is once again appealing to the community to rally behind children’s homes, as it continues its mission of restoring hope and rebuilding lives for 79 vulnerable children who call the village home.
For these children, Epworth is more than a place of shelter; it is a safe haven that offers stability, dignity, care, and the promise of a better future.
Many have come from difficult backgrounds, and the village plays a critical role in ensuring they grow up in an environment filled with love, structure, and opportunity.

As the new school year approaches, the children share the same hopes as every child across the country: to walk into their classrooms confident, prepared, and ready to learn.
Through its Back-to-School Campaign, Epworth Children’s Village is appealing to individuals, families, and businesses for support in the form of school uniforms, stationery, shoes, backpacks, and financial contributions.
While these items may seem small to some, they carry a life-changing impact for a child who has very little.
“These basic essentials restore confidence and dignity. No child should feel excluded or ashamed on their first day of school because they lack the necessary supplies,” said Penny Ann Lundie, Home’s Director.
Beyond education, Epworth provides comprehensive year-round care, including nutritious meals, healthcare, psychosocial support, and a stable home environment.
To sustain this work, the village is also encouraging SARS year-end donations from individuals and corporate partners.
These contributions are tax-deductible and directly support the daily needs of the children. The organisation is further calling on the community to consider becoming monthly donors, a commitment that helps ensure consistent care throughout the year.

“Monthly support allows us to plan ahead, respond to emergencies, and guarantee that every child receives ongoing care. When you give monthly, you’re not just donating, you’re becoming part of a child’s journey, growth, and future,” said Lundie.
She said the home has long relied on the compassion of the Germiston community, and once again, it is calling on that spirit of ubuntu.
“When communities come together, uncertainty is replaced with possibility and vulnerable children are given the chance to dream beyond their circumstances,” said Lundie.
