Germiston substations upgraded as Ekurhuleni promises winter electricity supply stability

Key substation upgrades in Germiston form part of a wider R150m infrastructure drive aimed at strengthening electricity supply ahead of peak winter demand.

The City of Ekurhuleni has prioritised electricity infrastructure upgrades in Germiston as part of a broader programme to improve power supply stability ahead of the winter season.

More than R150m has been allocated to strengthen substations and reduce the risk of outages as electricity demand increases during colder months.

In Germiston, work is underway at the Atom Road substation, where upgrades are aimed at improving electricity supply to surrounding industrial areas and supporting network reliability.

Teams are working on-site across Ekurhuleni to complete critical electricity infrastructure upgrades ahead of increased winter power demand.

Additional projects across the municipality include upgrades to the Anderbolt and Witkop substations, intended to reduce recurring outages.

Refurbishment work is also being carried out at the E/D Main substation in Thembisa and the Morehill substation near Benoni, including the installation of new switchgear technology.

The municipality said the upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to modernise ageing infrastructure and ensure a more stable electricity supply during periods of peak demand.

Electricity usage typically rises in winter as households and businesses rely more heavily on heating and other electrical appliances.

Mayoral spokesperson Ramatolo Tlotleng said teams are working on-site to meet the completion deadline, with all projects expected to be finalised by the end of June.
